Show open thanks for staying up with us tonight, i'm cash matlock.

We begin tonight with an unexpected move by the state flag commission --- they've narrowed the options down to two designs today.

Courtney ann jackson shows us the final two and tells us what's next in the process.

From digital to flying form-the five final designs flew one by one outside the old capitol as commissioners and members of the public waited for just the right glimpse for a photo.

And they admit-it made a difference to see them in that format .

"when we didn't have the breeze, the ones that have more or less the solid blue background, it just looked like a blue flag.

3 and 4, you could at least see multiple colors."

As part of the subsequent meeting-they were made aware of a discovery about the second design.

"when we were clearing the rights, the designer told us that the magnolia in that flag is clip art that he purchased online or she."

But any concerns were short lived as they decided to further narrow the finalists.

"it would give us a lot of information to see a vote based on fewer number of flags to get a better idea of where the public wants us to go."

They first voted to eliminate number 2 and 5.

But then...decided to take it down to just 1 and 4.

"it allows us to go head to head with two flags.

Then, the people really have a choice."

Flag expert clay moss weighed in on the designs... "the design is clean.

It's crisp.

It's straight forward.

I would probably eliminate the hatch marks within the red stripes."

"broaden the whole thing to be about here, same thing on the other side."

Commissioners took those suggestions and voted to widen the red and gold stripes.

The final selection that will appear on november's ballot will be made september 2.

Courtney ann jackson, three on your side.

Something else on the ballot this november... something else on the ballot this november... initiative 65.

A coalition of groups are announcing their opposition to the amendemant that would allow the use of medical marijuana.

Medical experts, law officers, pro family groups , along with clergy and elected officials were on hand for a news conference at the lee county sheriff's department.

All of the participants claim initiative 65 will take away rights from cities and the state to tax marijuana.

They al zoning ordinances could also be impacted.

Doctors and law officers say the passage of initiative 65 would create many problems "as the chief law enforcement officer, we can't regulate this, you're talking about can they have it in a home, not have it in a home , this many feet of a place or whatever, somebody has to go out and see that's taken care of and we don't have the staff or manpower or resources to do that."

"problems with ballot initiative 65 include, the legalization of an unlimited amount of thc content in marijuana, thc is the psycho active component of marijuana that produces the sensation of getting high or stoned" medical experts at the news conference said medical experts at the news conference said there are many safe and legal treatments available for people with a debilitating medical condition.

The initiative will be on the november 3rd ballot.

Volunteers with the red cross of north mississippi are preparing to help those who will be impacted by hurricane laura.

The tupelo office for the north mississippi chapter of the red cross is helping coordinate what could be a massive relief effort, depending on where the hurricane makes landfall.

Right now, there are about 400 volunteers along the mississippi gulf coast, making preparations to help if laura hits the coast and after it moves through the region.

K c grist is executive director for the red cross of north mississippi.

She says people in this area could be affected by rains from the hurricane.

"we want to really encourage people to prepare, to have that disaster kit ready, one of the things we always like to stress, is 'the first 72 is on you' in the event that help is not able to get to you right away, you want to be sure you family has enough water and food they could take care of themselves because, these storms are unpredictable and anything can happen" about ninety of those volunteers on the coast are from the mississippi and alabama region.

Some health experts believe the statewide covid-19 numbers are improving because mississippi is under a public mask mandate.

Now, governor tate reeves is being questioned about why he did not wear one recently while out-of-state.

Today at his press conference, reeves was asked about why he did not wear a mask while campaigning for north carolina lt.

Governor dan forest over the weekend.

Forest is running for governor of his state.

At the event, reeves was photographed without a face covering.

He says, he usually doesn't wear a mask when speaking publicly.

"it was a campaign event, we believe that political speech is protected.

It is not at all unlike the protests that went on in downtown jackson, so while i was in north carolina i wore a mask about 90 percent of the time... there are literally thousands and thousands and thousands of people outside the governor's mansion protesting... just because you agree with those who are protesting, doesn't mean there's not public health risk at doing so."

An update on mississippi schools also came from today's press conference.

Almost four thousand mississippi students have been asked to self- quarantine.

Students and educators getting coronavirus is a big concern for college campuses across the country.

More on this story after the break.

At one point, mississippi health officials were reporting well over a thousand new covid-19 cases a day.

You can see the trend on this mississippi state department of health graphic.

Now, that number has dropped by two hundred people.

The chart also shows fewer people in hospital i.c.u.'s across the state.

Baptist golden triangle chief medical officer dr. james martin says there are some improvements but there's still plenty of concern.

"this virus is here to stay" as we approach flu season, as more kids return to school and as more events start happening, the covid-19 numbers are expected to keep moving.

Sot - james martin - chief medical officer - baptist memorial hospital "we will continue to see little upticks here and there.

I do think it will continue to trend down.

But there will be times where you will have some positives here and there.

So we need to be cognoscente of the guidelines, continue to social distance when we can.

Wear our masks when we can not social distance."

Baptist golen triangle has 18 i.c.u.

Beds, where five covid-19 patients currently are receiving care.

The key here is there are several beds in critical care open, which hasn't been the case.

While baptist can expand its capabilities if needed, martin hopes people will do their part to keep hospital beds open.

Sot - james martin - chief medical officer - baptist memorial hospital áááshorter sotááá "it is probably first nature to say hey we are better we can stop that.

We are getting past it we need to continue to do what we've been doing, stay the course let's move forward and we will have this beat in no time."

Matin is pleased with how the hospital has responded to the pandemic.

Sot - james martin - chief medical officer - baptist memorial hospital "there's a lot of things you read out there that are not accurate especially here in mississippi.

We are doing well we've had a lot of support.

Baptist is a big hospital and we've done real well as fighting this disease.

I think we will continue that our staffing and for more information on these numbers, you can visit the mississippi state department of health website.

Henderson returns to oxford after serving as an assistant coach at thomas university, in georgia are sports more important than public health?

No is what head coach nick saban says as the southeastern conference fights for football this fall however, saban went on to say in his press conference on monday that if sports can be done safely...then football can happen and lot's of changes have been made for teams to conduct practices in the safest way possible in terms of if those changes have actually changed practices at alabama, saban says no saban: " everybody is focused on what do i have to do to be a good football player.

The wearing of the mask, the staying apart when you're not in there, but when you're playing, when you're in there playing and it's your turn and it's your rep we expect you to be one hundred percent focused on doing your job and do it the right way.

So i don't see any difference.

There's no difference for me except this thing around my neck that i wear when i put up here i can't seem to get the same emphasis that i'd like sometimes."

During the 2019 during the 2019 season, ole miss split quarterback between sophomore's matt corral and john rhys plumlee however, it's a new season with a brand new head coach as lane kiffin enters into his first season that means the quarterback competition is alive and well in oxford according to kiffin, both plumlee and corral have been getting reps at the q-b position during camp both also playing at quarterback as the rebels scrimmaged inside vaught-hemingway stadium this past weekend right now it seems, corral might be slightly ahead in the race but that doesn't mean the rebels will switch plumlee's position anytime soon "kiffin: "i thought matt played extremly well, hit some big plays..was really accurate.

John had a little bit more up and down.

Did some really good things.

Fumbled once for a big turnover but both of them did some things to excite us.

Now, that's the last thing we want to do right now.

He's in a quarterback competition and if you do that that'll take away from his development and the fact that he's still really young.

He's just playing quarterback."
