Is it safe for children to go back to school?

Children across the UK are set to return to the classroom, many of whom would not have stepped foot in school since the final bell rang on 20 March.

Parents are undoubtedly anxious their youngster may catch the coronavirus, which continues to circulate.

Evidence has repeatedly shown, however, that children are at significantly less risk of complications from the infection than adults.

A recent study by UK doctors found that out of 651 children who were ill enough to require hospitalisation with the coronavirus, just six (1%) died.

The medics stressed these youngsters all had a “profound comorbidity” – “not a bit of asthma” but a “life-limiting condition”.

A study by University College London also suggested children may be around half as likely to catch the coronavirus in the first place, let alone become seriously ill.
