After the longest offseason known to humankind, football returned to northeast mississippi.

We visited with both teams over the course of the week, booneville: they return 17 seniors, 9 returning starters on offense and they only lost two games last season.

New offense and a shortened preparation period.

Talking with new coach perry liles, he just wanted to see a strong effort out of his kids and for them to get better every week.

In starkville tonight, the clash of the titans, two teams who, if they don't finish their seasons in the state championship game, many would classify that as a disappointment.

I'm talking starkville and west point and our rhea thornton is live in starkville with the recap thanks matt.

I'm here in starkville for the battle in the golden triangle.

Two teams both defending the state title... the starkville yellow jackets took on the west point greenwaves at home.

First game of the season for both teams and you could just feel the competitive juices flowing between these two teams. down in the start of the third, west point makes quite the comeback with a shuffle pass to junior running back cameron young who scoots through the defense and high tails it down the sideline but gets taken down near the 5 yard line setting up his teammates in great field position, the green waves hand it off and just plows right into the endzone to cut the yellow jackets lead to 12.

But starkville makes a big play of their own... senior quarterback nyjal johnson hands it off to amar-i-yon howard who just bull dozes through several tackles and charges his way to the endzone... and starkville was the team who came out on top tonight with a 40-28 victory over the west point green waves.

But the tigers wouldn't stay quiet for long... the vols kick it off, and it lands into the hands of junior kd carter who dances through the defense, breaks tackles and finds himself open green... he runs back the kick return to cut the volunteer's lead to only 10...making the score 30-20.

Final score heritage academy hosted magnolia heights in their third game of the season... magnolia heights came out strong tonight... senior quarterback blake kirby makes a short pass to sophomore keondre fields who turns on the jets and makes his way down the field to put the chiefs in great position to score... on that same drive, the chiefs decide to go for it on 4th and 10... but boy does it pay off.
