Show open show open show open show open ?hospitalizations and icu use are factors that state leaders watch closely.

From the start, the governor has said a key part of the decision making is not allowing the healthcare system to be overwhelmed.

Courtney ann jackson checks on the current status of hospital capacity.

Here's the chart that shows from early march until last tuesday.

The red line represents patients with confirmed covid-19.

You see the spike in late july and early august.

And back to the right...the upward trend in not only hospitalized covid- 19 patients but also those in the icu and on ventilators.

The state health officer making this comment last week.

"be safe because if you get seriously ill, our resources are tapped out."

The state's only trauma center once again feeling that pressure mounting.

"our hospital beds are full.

Our icus are full.

So, if in fact we see more of the covid patients that are coming in and sick covid patients, then what we get into is can we take transfers?

Can we schedule surgeries for our own patients."

"i really think it's going to get bad for quite a while before it gets better with all these numbers we're seeing and how widespread it is around the country and around the world."

The university of mississippi medical center says it's better prepared for another wave.

"we're using those lessons that we learned to make sure that we can kind of ramp up and ramp down when needed as necessary as covid volumes change around us."

Some of the hospitalization numbers could be held to a lower number because they are expecting some antibody treatments to soon be available."

"it's for outpatients only and it's one infusion and we hope that the benefit is to keep them out of the hospital, to keep them from decompensating more so that they require hospitalization."

That antibody treatment will be for those most at risk of covid complications---so those who have underlying conditions or are immunosuppressed.

Governor tate reeves adds several north mississippi counties to a growing mask mandate.

Itawamba, montgomery, pontotoc, and winston are now part of growing lists.

Lee and yalobusha counties are under the same order until december 11th.

Last week, mississippi saw at least three days where more than one thousand new cases were reported.

Reeves uses certain criteria, such as how many cases over a period of time per one thousand people.

Oktibbeha county supervisors vote to extend the county curfew and reinstate the mask mandate.

District 2 supervisor orlando trainer says every meeting the board discusses whether or not to keep the county's curfew-- which right now is from midnight to 4 am.

This meeting, they unanimously chose to keep the curfew in place for another two weeks.

With the holiday season coming up, the board also decided in a 3-2 vote that it was in the best interest of the citizens to reinstate a mask mandate.

Trainer says oktibbeha county's covid-19 case number are lower than other counties, and he attributes those results to the curfew and mask mandate.

25 to 39-year-olds continue to lead the covid-19 case count in mississippi.

Today, that number topped 30 thousand.

The mississippi state department of health is reporting 589 new covid-19 cases and two deaths.

Those deaths occurred in pontotoc and winston counties.

778 people are in hospitals across the state with confirmed or suspected coronavirus symptoms. 185 patients are in i.c.u.

Right now, only 10 point seven percent of infected people need to be hospitalized.

More than 116 thousand people are presumed recovered from covid-19 in mississippi.

This means there are over 14 thousand presumed active cases in the state.
