He didn’t trust police but sought their help anyway. Two days later, he was dead

Records show Jameek Lowery, a 27-year-old Black man from Paterson, New Jersey, died two days after he was restrained and repeatedly punched by officers. Lowery was among more than 330 Black people of non-Hispanic descent who died after being restrained, beaten or shocked with stun guns by officers, The Associated Press found. The AP investigation examined fatal encounters over a decade involving police tactics that aren’t supposed to be deadly, unlike guns. Lowery and other Black people accounted for about a third of the 1,036 deaths catalogued by AP, despite representing just 12% of the U.S. population. The three-year investigation was led by AP in collaboration with FRONTLINE (PBS) and the Howard Centers for Investigative Journalism.
