Taiwan's Nationalist Party announces Chao Shao-kang as its vice presidential candidate, while the ruling Democratic Progressive Party selected William Lai as its presidential candidate, with Bi-khim Hsiao as his running mate. The smaller Taiwan People's Party unveiled Ko Wen-je as its candidate, along with Cynthia Wu Hsin-ying as his running mate. Terry Gou, founder of Foxconn, withdraws from the race. Separated by 160 kilometers (100 miles) of ocean, Taiwan and China split amid the civil war.
