Israel launches Gaza strikes after rockets fired at Tel Aviv

Israeli says it conducted roughly a hundred airstrikes on Hamas targets in Gaza overnight Thursday into Friday, after militants attempted rocket attacks on the city of Tel Aviv.

The attacks caused no damage though and it's not clear who conducted them.

Hamas denies responsibility and no one else has claimed them.

Israel's military gave conflicting answers: One general said they didn't know yet who attempted to attack Tel Aviv but a Lieutenant Colonel pointed the finger at Hamas.

The rocket attack was the first such attack on Tel Aviv since the 2014 war between Hamas and Israel.

Israeli analysts speculate that Palestinian militants opposed to any peace between Hamas and Israel may have done it.

The exchange of fire prompted bomb shelters to open in Tel Aviv as a precaution.

It's also not clear what the damage to Hamas was.

Israel said it hit a regional headquarters and weapons depot among other targets but some had already been evacuated.

Gaza health officials say a man and a woman were wounded.

The incident has rattled nerves ahead of Israel's election next month where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking a fifth term on the strength of his national security credentials.

A number of his opponents are now calling for Israel to resume its assassination of Hamas chiefs.

And, in the last year violent protests by Palestinians on the Gaza-Israel border have resulted in the death of roughly 200 Palestinians.

Two Israeli soldiers have been killed in the demonstrations.
