Celebrations are taking placeall over the world tonight...including right here in our area.

Good evening i'm gary liberatore.

The diocese of syracuse has agreed to a settlement with 79 people who filed a lawsuit against the diocese...claiming they were sexually assaulted by a priest.

News channel two's caitlin irla joins us now...with more on our top story tonight at eleven..

Gary, as you mentioned....79 of the cases have been settled...but.....there were a total of 88 that were filed.

Let's take a look at the other 9 that were not part of this settlement.

Therewere three that were deemed inelgible.... four people did not respond.... and two....declined their offer.

The diocese released a detailed report of the 14-month process to get to this point....on their website.

We asked for additonal comment, but a spoksperson for the diocese told us the report speaks for itself.

It was more than a year ago, in february of 2018 when bishop robert cunningham announced the establishment of the independent reconciliation and compensation program....or...i-r-c-p....in an effort to offer healing to those who have been sexually abused by clergy in the diocese.

At the time bishop cunningham said that although no amount of money can heal the wounds of child sexual abuse...the i-r-c-p was designed to acknowledge publicly the mistakes made by the church in the past and to offer victims a tangible sign of the church's desire for healing and reconciliation.

Here are the totals that the diocese has paid out to the 79 victims who have accepted the offer.

The total compensation for all 79 victims came to just under 11-million dollars.

Taking a look at the average amount per victim...that was just over 138-thousand dollars.

Back in december, bishop cunningham listed the names of the priests that had credible allegations against them.

Today's report does not list which priests were part of the claims of the 79 victims.
