Algerian fans took to the streets of their capital cirty to celebrate their nation's victory.

The country's national soccer team beat gallant Senegal one nil in Friday's (July 19) final for the Africa Cup of Nations - its second ever win.

The only goal came from Baghdad Bounedjah, in the second minute of the game.

Bounedjah, who missed a penalty in the quarter-final against Ivory Coast, stunned his opponents with his winning shot.

The final whistle provoked wild celebrations among Algerian fans in the stadium in Cairo... In Paris... In London... And in Algiers.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) SUPPORTER OMAR, SAYING: "They made us happy, they made all the Algerian people happy!

It was the time for celebrating, we are so happy!" In Dakar, Senegal fans who came out to watch the game were devastated.

It was the first time since 2002 that the Lions of Teranga had reached the AFCON final, when they were beaten by Cameroon on penalties.

This time, they were awarded a penalty for hand ball in the second half but the decision was revoked following a VAR review.

(SOUNDBITE) (French) SENEGAL SUPPORTER, BIRAME SALL, SAYING: "It's really sad to see Senegal's defeat because we really believed in it but maybe the gods of soccer weren't with us today."
