Prominent Putin critic Alexei Navalny is back in prison just a day after he rushed to the hospital for what his lawyer and doctor say was a suspected poisoning attack.

Navalny is now under extra guard.

Navalny took ill on Sunday (July 28) night after suffering from what appeared to be an acute allergic reaction.

He had severe swelling of the face and skin redness.

But one doctor said the lawmaker may have been poisoned with an unknown chemical substance.

His supporters gathered outside the hospital, only to be detained shortly after, with police picking up at least 12 people, including journalists.

It's after he called for this protest at the weekend.

Police in Moscow detained more than 1,000 people for illegally demonstrating.

They were demanding that members of the opposition be allowed to run in a local election later this year.

Navalny, a lawyer and anti-corruption activist, has served several stints in jail in recent years for organizing anti-government demonstrations.

But others say his condition is suspicious especially given he has never suffered from allergies in the past.
