Impeachment vote puts Representative Ron Kind in a difficult position facing reelection

Congressman ron kind finds himself with a difficult decision to make, as he faces re- election in 2020.

News 8's alec giannakopoulos has more on the choices he's facing..

Ron kind has promoted himself as an independent, bipartisan candidate since he won election in the late 90s.

But as times have changed, his bipartisan stance may put him in a tough spot.

"this is the time."

Up until this point... representative ron kind has declined to say how he would vote on impeachment.... "all of his campaign messaging is about how independent he is, how bipartisan he is."

Kind has worked to appear as open to both parties since he took office in the 3rd district 20 years ago.

"congressman kind's been able to do that."

But that might not be the case any more.

"party loyalty is the trend.'

Kind's district has voted for the democratic candidate barrack obama in 2008 and 2012.

But in 2016, it went red for president trump.

"you can interpret it as an outlier, or a trend for the republican party that was triggered by donald trump.

That puts kind in an interesting position.

Either way there's going to be pushback."

Republicans are already pushing back against kind.

With donald trump jr. encouraging followers to call kind's office, and protesters outside his eau claire office.

"the republican party sees it can gain an advantage and generate more intensity in a 50/50 divide."

"if he votes his conscience, and that's how he's voting, respect that."

And on the other political end, some area democrats point to kind's record as something that will relate to voters, no matter how he votes.

"he has enough political capital, and integrity for people to realize that he's voting his conscience."

But that political history may not be enough in this modern political climate.

"all of his campaign is about independent he is, bipartisan.

We're seeing a climate that's not hospitable for that kind of politics."

Ron kind is the only standing member of the house of representatives to have voted on two impeachment inquries.
