Is at 12.

The madison county sheriff's office has officially closed its doors to the public amid the growing coronavirus outbreak in our community.

And the closure comes just a couple of days after a sheriff's deputy was diagnosed with the virus.

Waay 31's rodneya ross is live outside the madison county sheriff's office this morning with how the office plans to operate for now.

The sheriff's office will still be responding to calls but will handle them over the phone when possible.

And if you need a pistol permit or to check in on an existing case -- you'll have to use your phone or the internet to take care of it.

The madison county sheriff's office sent a notice that they will be closed to public walk- in's until further notice.

This impacts the pistol permit office, criminal investigations division, and the records division.

Instead of walking in -- you can apply for a pistol permit online -- but you won't be able to pick it up until the office reopens.

And for the criminal investigations and records divisions you'll have to place a phone call.

But if an in-person meeting is necessary -- an investigator will schedule that directly with you.

They are asking the public to only call 9-1-1 if there is an emergency -- otherwise use the non-emergency line.

If a 911 call requires a deputy to respond -- the deputy will have personal protective equipment like gloves and masks and will make contact with the caller outside.

You can find the phone numbers i just mentioned on our website -- waay-tv-dot-com.
