U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley on Tuesday were asked whether social distancing guidance was being properly implemented in the military after a video posted online appeared to show military service members in close quarters, waiting in line to get haircuts on base.

During a news conference at the Pentagon, reporters asked if it was necessary for soldiers to get a haircut during a pandemic.

When Esper suggested suspending haircuts for a period of time, General Milley interrupted, saying "don't take that as guidance yet... there are a lot of ways to do haircuts." "Discipline is a fundamental function of our force," Milley emphasized.

"It may seem superficial to some, but getting a haircut is part of that discipline."
