The indiana department of child services is making sure foster kids and families are protected against covid-19.

At 5 o'clock...we told you how foster parents should have a plan in place to keep their entire family safe.

News 10's richard solomon breaks down more of that plan for you.

Richar} kristi cundiff is the founder of the indiana foster and adoptive parents resources and advocacy group.

She says with more than 20 thousand kids in the foster care system...it's vital to make sure the virus dosen't spread.

Cundiff says kids who are brought in the system are quarantined.

She says that's because no one can tell if they've been exposed to the virus or not.

Foster families should have a family safety plan in place.

Cundiff says have a space in your home where someone can be self quarantined if they're sick.

And it's important to ask for help.

Find who can help with childcare and making meals.

At the end of the day...cundiff says they want to make sure every child is safe.

"regardless if we have covid-19 or not we're always going to have a child welfare system.

It's critical right now with covid-19 going on that we know that we're going to have an influx in children that are going to need safe and protected homes" cundiff says the dcs has been checking in with foster families.

They're making sure they're not suscepitble to the virus.
