The community is also mourning the death of a terre haute fire fighter.

John schofstall died due to complications with covid 19.

The department is preparing for his services tomorrow.

News 10's sarah lehman is live in our newsroom.

She has more from one terre haute firefighter about what the community support means to the them.

Terre haute firefighters have been mourning the loss of one of their own.

But -- they say the support from this communtiy and surronding ones is helping get through this difficult time.

As the terre haute fire department prepares to remember and honor one of their own.

"john was larger than life."

They're speaking about his legacy... scott dalton is a captain for the terre haute fire department.

He says terre haute fire fighter john schofstall was a great public servant and will be missed.

"he's gonna be missed.

/// yeah, it's tragic but i guarntee john knew what he was doing.

Everytime he put on that uniform we know that there is a danger and he confronted that danger for the safety of his community."

And he says the way the community has come together to support the department during this difficult time has not gone unnoticed.

"it's been amazing what the community has done in this time of need from the donation of the sign in front of station 5 to people lining up in the parking lot and putting their hand out the window to show the guys in the 5 that support.

/// appreciate what the community has done to support us to help get us through this time."

As for schofstall -- dalton says... "he provided the ultimate sacrifice."

We should also mention dalton is also recovering from covid-19.

We will have much more on his story with the virus later on news 10.

But he says he knows schofstall will be honored tomorrow for his sacrifice.

He also says even though they are mourning the loss of their friend and coworker -- they are still thinking about the others who have lost their loved ones to this virus.

Services for services for john schoffstall will look differently tomorrow... but you can still show your support.

His services start at 11-o'clock tomorrow morning, at west vigo high school.

Members of the community are asked to stay in their cars.

Here's a look at the procession route.

Everyone will leave the school on thorpe place... and travel back to terre haute by u-s 40.

From there, they'll go onto ohio street... then turn onto 9th street to pass fire station 5.

The route continues on wabash... to 3rd street.

Family and friends will split at state road 63 for a private burial.

Fire officials hope you'll attend the services or line the route..

And pay respects.

The "garrison flag" will go up at noon tomorrow.

It's on u-s 40 near the west terre haute i-g-a.
