Will Robinson-Smith reports from Holmes Avenue where the block was selected in the city's effort to help some of the restaurants impacted by coronavirus restrictions.

Parking lot.

Happening now.

Part of holmes avenue will be closed for the next several hours.

It's part of the city's effort to help some of the restaurants impacted by coronavirus restrictions.

Waay 31's will robinson-smith is live on holmes avenue.

He spoke with downtown huntsville inc.

About why this block was selected and how the street closure will help.

The block where we are is holmes avenue between jefferson and spraggins streets.

As you can see, the restaurants on this stretch are able to bring their tables onto the sidewalk by the road, which is not usually the norm.

This is being done in an effort to help restaurants serve more people since their dining rooms can only have 50 percent occupancy at most.

Downtown huntsville inc says they chose this street partly because all three restaurants gave the green light to have the road in front of their shops closed.

Downtown huntsville inc c-e-o chad emerson says they tried a pilot of this last week and found it got a good reception.

Everyone wants to follow the restrictions and make everyone safer and get over this sooner.

And one way we can do that, while also helping the businesses, is to increase their outdoor dining.

They will be shutting down this block each friday and saturday night for the month of june.

Emerson wants people to remember that even though the road is blocked off, this is not a block party.

I'm told huntsville police will also be on hand to help make sure things stay orderly and social distancing guidelines are followed.

The road will stay blocked off until 9 tonight.
