Love Summer Ready program

A summer reading program is a bit different this year because of the pandemic.

They are taking reading and meals to homes.

21st century learning center has partnered with hardy elementary school for the last 15 years.

Their goal is to assist families with school age children who are zoned for hardy elementary.

During the summer, they help with tutoring and providing family meals.

Since covid-19 prematurely caused hamilton county schools to close their doors earlier, love fellowship has taken the classroom to the family's front door.

News 12's david moore takes us for a ride on tonight's edition of what's right with our schools.

Natural sound: it's the last day for books.

Joyce: well this is a pandemic.

And it's working differently.

Normally we would be working with the children at the school.

But now that we can't actually be in the same classroom with children it's very different.

Natural sound: this is the sheet that you are going to feel out.

The five finger retail.

Freda: it is important that students have books in the home.

Our focus is on literacy; for students to read every day and to enjoy what they are reading.

So this is why it's important.

Joyce: we go to each shells home once a week, and give them materials, books, manipulatives.

Natural sound: they go outside.

It's recess time.

Deondria: it gives my child something to do.

And it also gives me something to do with her as for as reading to her and you know to keep her up-to-date as far as her learning and everything.

Natural sound: are we ready?

Ready to go to the, ok ready.

All aboard.

Joyce: so we have been doing this now for 15, over 15 years.

Parents are so appreciative.

We are dealing with parents who can't work at home and then help their child.

We're dealing with parents who have, who are the essential workers.

They are the ones that work at wendy's and so forth and they have to work.

Lashonda: it helps them to kinda to get an idea of what to expect next year.

And also to stay on task and not forget everything that they learned.

And to pick up some new things.

Joyce: the messages find a way to help.

Don't just ring your hands and say whoa is me.

It's a pandemic so we can't help them because they won't come to get the materials and so forth so there's nothing i can do.

Yes there is.

We decided that we would go to them.

We would wear our gloves.

We wear our mask.

And we take our temperature before we go.

And we are safe when we go.

We let the parents and the children see our faces.

We let them know that we love them.

That we want them to do the very best that they can.

And it's important... every day, to read.
