Being used to during the coronavirus pandemic continues to be a hot-button issue across the country... yesterday president trump encouraging americans to use one when needed... and here locally, an area community will soon have a new mask mandate... kq2's chris roush joins us live in studio... alan... the emergency maryville city council meeting to vote on a face covering ordinance came to be yesterday... and through social media city leaders spread the word to get the community's thoughts on the issue... city leaders told me hundreds of emails were sent to the city council.... and just on the city manager's facebook page... almos 500 comments... but when it came down to the city council's vote this morning... there was still more conversation... <<(nat sound: public meeting) the wednesday morning emergency city council vote.... wasn't supposed to involve public comment....(nat sound: public)but the two readings of a mask ordinance and vote turned into a 30-minute affair...(sot, greg mcdaniel: anytime with public.")as state officials continue to say, there will not be a state-wide mandate, (sot, randell williams: it leaves local officials to make the decisions...(sot, greg mcdaniel: "tough decisions."

With coronavirus cases doubling in the last 10 days and thousands of college students returning next month...city leaders brought the mask order to the city council...(sot, greg mcdaniel: discussing plan.")the unaminous decision by the council allows maryville to mandate simlar face-masks orders as other college towns in missouri.... (sot, greg mcdaniel: "slow the spread.")the order will run through the end of september, but can always be adjusted, but the goal for the mask order is to keep businesses going...(sot, greg mcdaniel: ")>> to be clear, this morning's agenda did not include a public forum portion to the meeting... just a reading and vote on the ordinance... leaders from mosaic medical center maryville, nodaway county health, and northwest, as well as city leaders hope this mask mandate which takes effect on monday will not require any further mandates or orders for the community... reporting live in studio... chris roush...
