Now, Fort Wayne Police are uring others to reach out before it's too late.

Fort wayne police say a man shot himself ?in front of an officer?

This morning after setting fire to his own home.

Fox 55's brianna dahlquist talked to police about how they can help before it's too late.

A cry for help.

"we received a call saying there was a note on the door indicating there were threats of suicide."

/woodswoodsfort wayne police responded to this home on warsaw street just after 10 this morning.

They found the note on the door but not the man threatening to harm himself.

Officer lisa woods says officers used a loudspeaker to try and make contact with him but after several minutes he didn't respond.

A few moments later there was an explosion that shattered the windows in the home.

/woodsfort wayne firefighters say that explosion ignited a fire that damaged the front end of the house.

As the house burned woods says an officer saw the man walk out the back.

He saw a male that walked out the back door of the residence with a gun to his head.

The officer attempted to verbally engage with the subject, letting him know we were there, we were there to help him.

And a few sedconds later the subject shot himself in the head."

/woodspolice say they pulled him away from the burning home and rendered aid until paramedics took him to the hospital with life threatening injuries.woods says the note indicated this was more than just a house fire it was a mental health issue.

"fwpd would like to encourage anyone that is going through a tough time in their life and they are having suicidal thoughts to call us or a local agency in town."

/woodsjennifer barnes, the suicide task force cooridnator says mental health is just as important as physical heath.

"if you're having a heart attack, what do you do?

You go to the hospital, right?

You see a doctor.

Your brain can get sick just like any part of your body."

/barnesbarnes says even if you are going through some challenges, your life has a purpose.

""everybody's valuable and important.

They have to see that you're still valuable if you say you need help, you're still valuable if you say you can't do this by your self and that you need help."
