FWHA reacts to eviction moratorium being extended through August 14

Hoosiers struggling to make rent payments for July won’t have to worry about getting evicted, at least for a couple of weeks.

I'm hunter petroviak.

Thanks for joining us.

Governor eric holcomb has extended the eviction moratorium for the state of indiana through august 14th.

Meaning hoosiers struggling to pay rent for july won't be facing eviction, at least for a couple of weeks.

Fox 55's jeremy masukevich spoke with the fort wayne housing authority today and tells us how they'll be helping people stay afloat, jeremy?

Hunter, george guy president and ceo of the fwha says he was pleased governor holcomb extended the eviction moratorium.

But says the pressure is on to get hoosiers in stable situations before august 14th.

Guy says it's a task too large for just one group and will take collaboration throughout communities in northeast indiana.

We have to continue to collaborate.

A lot of the agencies locally in fort wayne, we have to continue to communicate with one another and be prepared.george guy with the fwha says the covid- 19 pandemic has taken a toll on everyone in some way.nat guy 47:49folks are really in survival modeand with a variety of financial obligations, many have had to prioritize payments.sot guy 48:21whatever their budget is hopefully they are making sure they are budgeting their housing and staying stable like that.

And making sure all their other priorities are aligned with their family goals.an additional two weeks with no evictions will provide peace of mind for those struggling with rent payments.but guy says this doesn't solve the problem and many in fort wayne may lose housing stability if they don't seek the assistance they need.nat guy 47:03when these things start to end it can be a problemsot guy 45:55we want to make sure hoosiers are taken care of right now, especially the most vulnerable amongst us.

We want to make sure they have some housing that provides stability.guy says it's a matter of knowing where to lookalong with indiana state rental assistance initiatives the fwha is providing tenant-based programs to help people with rent in fort wayne.sot steph 3:30 1:45this is not a normal situation and i cannot imagine how people are feeling right now if they are not used to this.

We had some accounts that had perfect pay history until march.stephanie scott with the kosciusko rural electric membership cooperative says they've had to take a proactive approach in reaching those in need.sot steph 4:55my goal is just to have the team listen to what is going on and try to offer solutions, to ease their mind in an uncertain situation.

Whether it be rent, car payments, or utilities scott says getting over the fear of asking for help will be the difference maker in keeping hoosier afloat.sot steph 6:55 7:08for their electric bill there's assistance out there, for their rent their is assistance out there.

And alot of people don't even realize that it is there.

So we explain to them that there is help out there to help you pay these things.

One positive guy pointed out is that the new fwha river's edge the new fwha out is that guy pointed one positive one positive guy pointed out is that the new fwha river's edge property has welcomed it's first 20 members over the past few weeks.
