Governor responds to Chicago mayor's comments

Gov.

Tate Reeves responds to a comment made by the Chicago mayor about illegal guns coming from Mississippi.

Comments in Chicago mayor made aboutguns coming into her city forMississippi and being behind, I believethat that's led to violent crime.

Youresponded on social media prettystrongly about that.

Yeah, that's Ah,it was an unfortunate comment.

Thosecertainly we in Mississippi believe inthe Second Amendment.

We believe in theright to keep and bear arms, and wecertainly have the ability to purchasethose firearms in our state.

And weshould, Um what's happened is that insome cities around the country, and andI'll point out that here in Mississippi, number one, we've had peaceful protest. We've had, um, we virtually everySaturday.

Different groups haveprotested over the last three months, and we've had very peaceful protests. And while we have the same gun lawstoday that we had three months ago, what we have seen, some uptick in crimehere in the city of Jackson hadn't beendriven or lead within the pro testingthat has transpired.

And so what Iwould say to anyone who wants to blameour wants to blame Mississippians, thepeople of Mississippi, for theincreasing crime in the city of Chicagothat just doesn't pass the smell test.It doesn't make sense.

It's just, quitefrankly, it's a conspiracy theory thatjust doesn't work.

And so the fact isthat there are cities around thiscountry, whether be Portland or Seattle, maybe Chicago and others in whichthey've had a significant effort todefund the police.

And the reality isin those areas in which that has beenthe mantra of the leadership, it shouldnot surprise them that they've had asignificant uptick in violence and insome instance, unfortunately in in thenumber of people that are getting shot, etcetera.

Um, the fact in Chicago, I'mtold that there was over 100individuals that were shot, um, in themonth of July.

Mississippi'slaws with respect to firearms was thesame in July of 2020 as it was in Julyof 2019 which is the same as it was inJuly of 2018.

And so it's a ludicrousstatement, and I think, look, it's ah,it's a tough time for everyone.

And soI'm not gonna, um, criticized the mayor, but that just that just doesn't makeany sense
