Social distancing guidelines are tough to follow when it comes to early voting.

That's causing some popular locations to drop out.

County is shaping up to be a busy affair.

That could make social distancing difficult.

St.

Thomas aquinas center is only early voting location close to purdue's campus.

And as news 18's joe paul reports, tippecanoe county as a whole is short on early voting centers this year.

"we are outside st.

Thomas aquinas center at purdue, across the street from purdue university."

The catholic church is currently the only early voting center in close proximity to purdue's campus.

The lone voting center is a good example of how the pandemic is impacting early voting for the general election.

Ken jones is voter services chair for the league of women voters.

He says social distancing guidelines are tough to follow when it comes to early voting.

That's causing some popular locations to drop out.

Those include pay less grocery stores and assisted living facilities.

Several locations on purdue's campus are also up in the air.

"losing payless and losing the purdue locations just changes the game for thousands and thousands of voters."

Board of elections staff member germany harris says the board is planning 450 early voting hours.

That's to counteract the lower number of locations.

"many voters feel that this is an important election, so that could drive the numbers up.

My speculation is we'll see maybe an increase in that number for turnout.

The board of elections is working with purdue to expand the number of on-campus locations.

A purdue spokesperson wasn't available to comment.

"they're still trying to vigate their way through the pandemic with students returning to school.

We've been respectful of their process, we're just kind of waiting for what they want to do."

Indiana has also not expanded absentee voting for the general election.

And that could be a recipe for busy early voting centers, which will begin opening october sixth.

"we're not gonna get quite the pressure relief valve of absentee voting on physical sites."

Again that was joe paul reporting.
