Fire crews that helped saved the historic goodpasture covered bridge in the holiday farm fire are speaking out for the first time.

Mckenzie fire and recue chief darren bucich (gave the order to send four of his crew members to protect the iconic bridge as the fire grew near.

A member of the oregon state fire marshals office also helped.

Firefighter david sherwood saw the fire destroy a nearby home and thought surely the bridge would be next.

But crews set up around the bridge and even sprayed a special protective foam on the 82- year-old structure.

"we also stretched wildland hose across to the other side of the bridge to help protect that spot from spot fires because goodpasture road was on fire and the fire was moving this way, and we also had fire coming at us this way, which was blowing embers to that side and right on top of us" sherwood said a hot ember did land on the roof and burn a shingle.
