Police department works to expand diversity.

This morning the huntsville police department is working to hire a diverse group of police officers.

Waay 31's ashley carter is live at the police department with why they say recruiting people of all races and cultures is important.

In a statement, police chief mark mcmurray told us they want their officers to reflect the diverse community in which they serve.

The department currently has around six hundred and sixty employees.

Of those, one hundred and 82 are women, and 24 percent are minorities.

The department's recruiter says he's always working to bring people of all races and cultures to the police academy.

Officer paul nordan, huntsville police recruiter, "this is the community these officers are going to serve.

We want them to be embedded in the community.

We want our citizens to feel comfortable with the officers that are serving them."

Were told the current academy also has a diverse group of candidates committed to being officers.

Later today, councilwoman frances akridge is hosting a town hall with the police department to help develop a partnership between them and the public.
