The History Center of Olmsted County is marking a major milestone and showcasing the moment women gained the right to vote in a national election.

Conference taking place at the history center of olmsted county is marking a major milestone .... one hundred years ago, women gained the right to vote in a national election.

It's being showcased as part of the onward march of suffrage movement exhibit.

Kimt news three's mary peters shows us how rochester women took leadership to expand the vote.

Xxx with that new reponsibility of being able to vote, women needed to practice ... so one of the things they did is set up a booth where they could go out and actually fill out a ballot.

And once it's filled out, they can turn it in.

In addition to that practice voting booth ?

"* the exhibit at olmsted county history center includes a jail cell ... a reminder of what women endured during their fight to vote.

The executive director wayne gannaway describes one rochester woman's efforts.

"in 1867, sarah burger stearns, along with another woman, went to the state legislature and demanded that the constitution of the state of minnesota be changed to allow women to vote... and they made a really compelling case."

The state did not make this change.
