Columbia City Raceway reopens after COVID-19 shutdown

After being closed since March because of COVID-19, Columbia City Raceway owner Aaron Hall says last's weeks reopening turned out better than he anticipated.

After being shut down since spring because of covid-19, the columbia city raceway is back on track this season.

Fox 55's mallory beard shows us how a father and son duo are getting back to their favorite pastime behind the wheel.

Fifteen- year old weston hanks has been slot car racing since he was seven years old.

A sport passed down from his father.weston hanks//racing since he was seven y/o"me and my dad have been doing this for a long time.

He's the one that got me into it."

Weston and his father make an hour long drive every week to columbia city raceway to compete.

Their favorite winter pastime after drag racing all summer long together .

"weston drove a junior dragster.

This is a replica we had painted and made into a scale model of it."

We go to indianapolis to ohio to kentucky to michigan."

After being closed since march because of the covid-19 pandemic, raceway owner aaron hall says last week's reopening turned out better than he anticipated.

Aaron hall//raceway owner"we had an age range from 6 to 70 and all ages in between and we had 18 racers in heere last week and 108 cars."

But he still recommends social distancing .

And says racers, even if a little older, have a safe place to relive their racing days.

Aaron hall//raceway owner"everybody enjoys it, because as kids we always built models and put them up on the shelf and watched them collect dust.

Well now we can build those same models and watch them go 50 miles an hour and enjoy them in that aspect."
