A Contortionist's Entire Routine, From Waking Up to Training

Self-taught contortionist Sofie Dossi lets us into her daily life as she makes video content with her brother and trains her body for handstands and backbends.

She breaks down her entire daily routine from waking up and stretching to preparing her makeup for shows.

- Hey, I'm Sofie Dossi.I'm a professional contortionistand this is how I work it.I'm going to take youthrough 24 hours of my beautyand wellness routine.I started doing this whenI was about 12 years oldwhen I saw a YouTubevideo of a contortionist.I was like, "Oh, this is cool."And I tried it and I realized,"Oh, I can do contortion."I started teaching myself at homeby like studying the YouTube videos, trying to get every pose right. And I basically trainat least an hour a dayor until my arms just get really exhaustedand I just can't do any more handstands.I'm always trying new tricksand new transition movements.I couldn't tell you howmany poses I do.

I do a lot.Probably one of the bestmoments of my life was probablywhen I got the Golden Buzzeron "America's Got Talent."I was so shocked and justnever expected that at all. That was the craziest thingthat has ever happened. On my YouTube channel,I do my contortion tricksor just funny videos.I think I have like 400videos on my channel.I've been making videos every weekfor about three-and-a-half,four years now.And never skipped a week, which is crazy, but it's what I, what I love to do, so.People think with contortion,it's a lot of just being flexible, but there's actually a lotmore strength and core workto it than just being flexible.I'd say what makes me wantto do this every single dayis just loving contortion, loving the creativity of it,how you can just expressyourself through your movement. It's kind of like dancing, except my own kind of version.[air whooshing]Good morning, guys. It's currently likenine o'clock right now.I normally wake up aroundthe same time every dayno matter how late I go to bed.Oh my God, I'm like kindof half asleep right now.I was up kind of late editing a video.I'm just going to stretch towake up a little bit more. For me, waking up in themorning in the morningand a morning stretchis me doing contortion. So I kind of just like roll around. And it's the only way I can get a stretch.I can't just like be like.I just got to bend in half.Yeah, let's just do that for a little bit.And then I probably getup, shower, get ready. So I just got out of the showerand I kind of just put on some clothes. My hair is wet right now.And I kind of just brushit out while it's wet.I'll put some leave-in conditioner mixedwith regular conditioner in my hair.Scratch it up with my hands. That's how the curls are coming back. Then I'll diffuse it to dry it faster.I just kind of do this for awhile.[light music]And now, it's dry. After that, I'll have breakfast.I make myself this, it's kindof like, it's kind of a salad.Take some spinach, cabbage.Smoosh this avocado.Take a lemon and I'm going tosqueeze some on the avocado. Some salt. Then I'm just going to mixit in like it's a dressingto my salad.Bon appetit. If I know I'm going to do hand balancing,I'll normally just eatfruits or like saladso that it's very light.I'll normally make surebefore I do hand balancing notto eat at least an hour or two before. For a performance, I'll not eat for likeat least four hours before. So I eat breakfast. After that, I'll normally goand do a little bit of makeup.I'd say my camera makeup, Ialways like to keep it natural.I don't really like too much makeup. With my performance makeup,I do a little bit more, just like a little bit more of everything. The first step in my performance routinefor makeup is I just takea little bit of concealer.I kind of just put it inlike spots that need it.This spot used to be a pimple.I like to blend it in with my fingers.I feel like it comes off better than likeif you use a beauty blender. With my nails, I normallydon't have them too long.Doing hand balancing, or like aerial hoop,or things like that, you can easily break anail, and that hurts.I normally do gel nailscause they stay on longer. If I use just normal nail polish,it'll like chip and break off.But I like doing my nailsbecause in performancesnormally they always zoom upon my hands. So if your nails aren't done, then you're just going to,it's not going to be pretty.People think it's mainly arm strength, but it's actually more fingerstrength than balancing. When I first started handbalancing, I was like,"Why are my fingers getting sore?"It's this part of yourarm and then your fingers.I'm gonna take a little bit of powder, just so like I don't shine.I'm just going to dab allaround, and then blush.I love blush.Sometimes I put a little too much on.But I just, I feel likeI can't go without blushand lip gloss. If I have those things, like,I don't need anything else. And then I'll normallytake some highlightercause it makes you justpop out on performancesjust a little bit more, kind of like sparklesbut like less dramatic.
