Trump accuses Iran of secret nuclear enrichment

In his latest swipe at Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday accused it of having been secretly enriching uranium in violation of the 2015 nuclear deal "for a long time." Trump offered no evidence, but he warned in a Twitter post that "substantial" new sanctions would be coming soon, on top of an earlier wave that has slashed Iran's oil revenues.

Tensions have been rising since Trump pulled the U.S. out of the multi-nation nuclear deal last year.

Tehran on Sunday announced it had enriched uranium to 4.5 percent... above the limit set by the 2015 deal.

Iran insists the move is within the framework of the accord.

The International Atomic Energy Agency was holding an emergency meeting Wednesday in Vienna to discuss Iran's recent nuclear activities.

On Tuesday the top U.S. military officer - Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford - said the U.S. was working to build an international coalition to protect shipping in the Middle East ...after the bombing of several oil tankers, which the U.S. blames on Iran.

Washington has been pushing a maximum pressure campaign, aimed at forcing Iran to renegotate the nuclear pact, which Iran says it will never do.
