Hoosier leaders are learning more about the covid-19 pandemic.

Good evening and thanks for joining us.

Throughout this pandemic, many have compared covid-19 to the flu.

They're both serious.... but state officials say covid-19 is much more severe... and the precautions laid out are necessary.

News 10's dominic miranda asked governor eruic holcomb about this today.

Dominic joins us now with more on what the governor said about these comparisons.

Their message was to re-open the economy sooner, and that the coronavirus is simply a form of the flu.

I asked governor holcomb about this and he began with two words: not close.

Governor holcomb gave this stat: over the past 5 years, indiana has averaged 154 flu deaths per flu season.

That's over a seven month period.

In the last 7 weeks, 661 hoosiers have died due to covid-19.

Indiana state health commissioner dr. kristina box acknowledged that there are similarities between the 2 with symptoms and those commonly affected.

But both she and governor holcomb say the corona virus is a much more deadly.

Governor eric holcomb "were at 661 deaths, and that's on top of the flu.

There is no vaccine.

You're not going in and getting a shot and have the confidence that you can go back to work.

In terms of antibodies, and treatment and vaccines-as she said, different animal."

Governor holcomb said the state of indiana will move very slowly and intelligently in re-opening the economy.

This is because covid-19' is not the run of the mil flu.

Its much more severe and the governor says they will treat it as such to keep everyone in this state safe.
