Local law enforcement agencies here at home are reacting to the nationwide call for change.

Some people across the country continue to call for police reform..

And local law enforcement agencies are responding.

Action news now reporter kristian lopez is live in oroville, kristian you spoke with the police chief, what did he tell you?

Police chief joe deal says they have already implemented some changes and they are looking at different areas to improve on.

Deal says right now people are asking for a number of things including police reform.

He says that the department's biggest priority is making sure the community is safe and their policy reform and implementation will be done in an effective way to ensure transparency and accountability.

Deal says there's a lot being discussed about chokeholds, deescalation training, warning before shooting, duty to intervene.

He says the department is already following those laws but looking at ways to improve.

We already have a warning before shooting and a detailed reporting system when it comes to use of forces.

We already are in compliance with those laws.

But it comes to chokeholds, i know there's discussion about banning them and although the oroville police department has a policy, i have banned that hold in the department.

In the last month he has also expanded their duty to intervene policy to all staff.

This means he wants staff members to intervene*not onl* if they see an officer use excessive forc* but also if they witness any harassment, discrimination or disparaging treatment of others.

Police chief joe deal says overall his department has a good relationship with the community and he wants that to continue.
