Chico Police shares its '8 Can't Wait' policies

The Chico Police Department has made changes to its policies in response to a national movement.

National movement called 8 can't wait is pushing police departments to make 8 major changes to policy and training..

Action news now reporter mackenzie drigo shows us how chico p-d is handling this call for change.

Hayley -- chico p- d addressed each of the 8 demands, point by point today.

One of the 8 calls for change: is that police officers require warning before shooting.

Chico pd says according to it's code of conduct..

A verbal warning and opportunity to comply should procede the use of (control) devices... unless it would otherwise endanger the safety of officers" another request?

To ban shooting at moving vehicles.

Chico p-d policy says, in part: "fireing at or from a moving vehicle is rarely effective.

Officers should move out of the path... instead of discharging their firearm at the vehicle or any of its occupants."

Another demand: police exhaust all alternatives before shooting.

Chico p-d code says: "officers should evaluate the use of other reasonably available resources and techniques when considering whether to use deadly force."

One community member says she wishes these protocals happened earlier.

"i think its good that theyre starting to address and starting to see that there is something that needs to be changed, i just feel like it shouldnt of taken this long we have been progressing over time maybe they should have thought of different situations at the end of the day were still human, it shouldnt have taken protest and alot of situations around the world, someone to die for them to honestly understand that things need to change," chico pd states control devices may be used when a decision has been made to control, restrain or arrest a subject who is violent or demonstrates violence.
