Jo Swinson warns of 'nationalism' after losing seat

Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson lost her seat in Dunbartonshire East to the Scottish National Party candidate Amy Callaghan and warned of a rise in nationalism on both sides of the England-Scotland border following an anticipated disappointing night for the party.

Swinson, who had a majority of 5,339 in the constituency, lost to her closest rival Amy Callaghan of the Scottish National Party by 149 votes in one of the shocks of the evening as Britain's political landscape is redrawn.

Swinson only became the party's leader in July and had campaigned to overturn Britain's 2016 vote to leave the EU.

SNP candidate Callaghan said the vote was a clear message for self-determination with her party leader Nicola Sturgeon urging a new independence vote to try and keep Scotland in the European Union.
